President's Project: Heifer International (All contributions should be sent to Headquarters in Lakeland or to Linda Dennis payable to FFWC and marked "Heifer International") Goal to raise at least $70,000 - the equivalent of 14 arks, one representing each of our 14 FFWC districts. Charlyne Carruth, chairman, has challenged the districts to raise one ark per year, making a total of 28 arks for the term. Watch the progress in the chart at end of this page! During each administration, the FFWC President has the privilege of selecting the FFWC President's Project. Heifer International is the 2008-2010 FFWC President's Project. Hunger and poverty continue to be a challenge to families both at home and abroad. Malnutrition and hunger are the number one risk to global health - killing more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. An estimated 100,000 people, including 16,000 children, die every day from hunger-related diseases. Heifer International works to alleviate this problem by providing livestock, trees, and training in animal husbandry and farming to help struggling families build sustainable futures. Heifer's gifts of animals offer marketable products of milk, eggs, meat, wool, draft power, and other benefits that can be used to provide improved nutrition, health, and income for resource-poor families. These gifts offer hope to families for an improved quality of life. Over the years Heifer has developed a set of guiding principles called the "12 Cornerstones" to direct their work. One of the most significant is "Pass on the Gift'' in which recipients agree to pass one or more of their animal's offspring and training in sound agricultural practices to another recipient. In doing so a former recipient gains not only hope for the future but an increased dignity in being able to become a donor and help others. Women make up 70 percent of the world's poor, having often been denied education and opportunities. Another significant aspect of the work of this wonderful organization is its emphasis on gender equity - working with women in particular - helping them to share in decision-making and animal ownership. Our goal is to annually raise funds to provide at least 14 "arks'' of animals, one representing each of our 14 districts. An ark, costing $5000, provides a variety of livestock to those in need. These might be water buffalo to a family in Asia, goats to children in Romania, urban gardening and barrel fisheries to inner city families in the United States, and heifers to families worldwide. Clubwomen may support this project * with monetary donations * by designing local club projects * by inviting representatives to come and speak to their individual clubs by participating in district and state fund-raisers * by showing the FFWC - Heifer International DVD * by sponsoring Read to Feed or Get It programs Projects can be developed to fit into any of our six departments. Your state President's project chairman and your district HOPE chairman will help you in developing programs and projects for your club. During the next two years you are invited to join in ''Sharing Hope for a Better Tomorrow.'' With your help we can truly improve the lives of others by breaking the cycle of hunger, poverty and despair for families in the United States and around the world. |
